Important Message for Parents

Wednesday, September 5, 2018

Dear Families and Staff:

This is a follow up to my initial water test results notification letter and I am reaching out to
provide you with an update of the remediation progress.
All operational sources of water, including for drinking or preparing food, was tested for
lead. Currently 3 out of 207 fixtures remain elevated at John Dewey HS – K, 50 Avenue X
Brooklyn, NY 11223. Any elevated drinking water or food preparation fixtures were
immediately taken out of service. After remediation, which included the replacement of
fixture(s) and piping to the wall, the DOE conducted post-remediation testing and found
that one or more fixtures still tested above the action level for lead, 15 parts per billion
(ppb). Remediation work will continue until all fixtures reach acceptable levels and
applicable fixtures can be returned to service. The custodial staff will also continue to flush
water systems on Monday mornings before school starts, in order to eliminate water that
has been stagnant in pipes over the weekend and to ensure water is available for students
and staff.

Complete test results are posted on the DOE website at

Click on Data and Reports and look for the Facilities Heading.
New York City water is of the highest quality and our robust protocols ensure water in
schools is safe for students and staff to drink. Citywide, 99% of fixtures are testing below
15ppb, and are fully online. Any applicable fixture with an elevation remains out of service
until it tests below the action level of 15 ppb.
Thank you for your patience and support.

Sincerely yours,
Elizabeth A. Rose
