Computer Science Hackathon

John Dewey High School participated in the Computer Science for All “Animal Rescue” Hackathon on November 3rd. Sarina Lim, who teaches software engineering, guided students as they created public service announcements for the Wildlife Conservation Society in Scratch, a visual programming language. At the end of the day, John Dewey’s “Save the Tigers!” team won an award for designing and coding a game that highlighted the challenges of monitoring poachers.

One of the team members was Leilani Frederick, a 9th grader who began programming at John Dewey just two months ago. “Our trip to the hackathon was the most exciting and educational trip I have had,” she said. “I liked that we had to work in groups, we were competing, it taught me a lot about coding and encourages me to do better.”
