NYSMEA hosts Events for Clean ups and Coastal Studies, Celebrating It’s My Estuary Day

NYSMEA hosts Events for Clean ups and Coastal Studies, Celebrating It’s My Estuary Day

John Dewey HS Students, Staff and Parents lend a helping hand!

Coney Island Creek has been a polluted and neglected body of water in Brooklyn, NY for many decades. The marine educational event “It’s My Estuary” took place on May 30, 2015 at Kaiser Park. This event was a celebratory community service event that brought awareness to the community about the values of the salt marsh and the need to restore and care for it. NYSMEA along with the Cultural Research Divers, and the city’s park foundation organized the event. Our school came out in full force. The activities, demonstrations, and guest speakers’ eco-chat presentations, along with our robotics and microscope display tables engaged people throughout the day. Billion Oyster Project relocated oyster gardens to the park as part of an effort to restore NY Harbor with oyster reefs. Students learned how to monitor oyster growth and collect water chemistry data. Students also used technology to gather weather and climate data. Overall it was a great day with over 500 people in attendance and it brought marine environmental awareness to the community about the treasures of the creek.
