BusinessThe Academy of Business Management and Culinary Arts focuses on preparing students with the technical skills they need to apply to future careers and everyday situations. We offer paid and unpaid internships, job shadowing, mentoring and partnerships through the National Academy of Finance and Careers through Culinary Programs.

John Dewey High Schools Culinary program is a New York State approved CTE program of study and has articulation agreements with various colleges. We have three chefs on staff that will train students in all aspects of culinary arts. Our students are offered Career & Financial management to give them an insight to financial aspects of their futures.

Summer/School Year Internships: Students in both the 11th and 12th grade are invited to apply for paid internships in a culinary setting during either the summer (100 hours) or academic year (60 hours). The internships are organized by a joint partnership between the NYC Department of Education and C-CAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program) and students are compensated at the minimum wage rate. The WBL Coordinator conducts site visits and coordinates student payroll. Student applicants must participate in both an interview, and if selected, an orientation, prior to the start of their internship.

Community Service: CTE Culinary Arts students often engage in service to the school community. This includes assisting their Culinary Teacher after school hours with preparing food items for school events, supporting peers with utilizing the kitchen facilities during after-school culinary club meetings, and representing the CTE culinary Arts program at after-hours and off-site events, such as the NYC CTE High School Fair. Job Shadowing: Students are offered job shadow and workplace visit opportunities on a frequent basis. These opportunities are provided and advertised to the school by organizations including C-CAP, NAF, and NY Exploring. Job shadowing involves a more individualized student experience, while a workplace tour involves a larger group of students. Data involving student participation in work experience programs is tracking by the Work-Based Learning Coordinator, who has the teaching license extension: Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Programs for Career Development.
